The life tree metaphor has been growing in my mind as I think about how to structure my digital garden ecosystem. It feels more organic than traditional organization systems—less like filing cabinets and more like living growth.

The Wedding Branch
I’m developing what I call the “wedding branch” for January 18, 2026. Rather than treating wedding planning as separate from my digital garden work, I want to see how it can grow from the same roots and strengthen the same trunk.
Cross-Pollination: The skills I’m developing for MDX Editor The Evolution of Content Creation: Why Specialized MDX Editors Matter
Exploring how purpose-built editing tools for MDX are transforming the digital gardening and technical writing landscape are the same ones I’m using for our wedding invitation. The design systems thinking applies to both technical tools and celebration aesthetics.
Natural Growth Patterns
What I find compelling about the tree metaphor is how it suggests natural, organic growth rather than forced categorization:
- Branches emerge naturally from the trunk based on life circumstances
- Seasonal cycles allow for periods of growth, harvest, and dormancy
- Unexpected connections form between seemingly unrelated branches
- Root systems support everything above ground, even if they’re not visible
“A tree doesn’t plan its branches in advance—it responds to light, weather, and opportunity while staying rooted in its foundation.”
Digital Garden as Living Tree
In my digital garden:
- Root pages contain fundamental frameworks and values
- Trunk content documents ongoing learning and skill development
- Branch collections hold specific projects, relationships, and events
The wedding branch contains:
- Planning documentation
- Design explorations
- Technical implementation (invitation as MDX)
- Reflection on partnership and commitment
- Connection to family and cultural traditions
Seasonal Awareness
Currently in: Late Summer/Early Fall 2025
- Planting season for wedding preparation
- Growing season for technical tool development
- Approaching harvest as wedding date nears
- Reflection time about next life phase
The tree doesn’t stop growing after one major event. The wedding branch will continue evolving throughout our marriage, just as other branches develop over time.
Connections and Cross-Pollination
What excites me most about this metaphor is how it naturally suggests connections:
- Wedding planning → design system thinking → technical tool development
- Partnership commitment → collaborative work patterns → professional relationships
- Cultural celebration → storytelling skills → content creation
- Family traditions → personal values → creative expression
Future Branches
As I look ahead, I can imagine other branches that might emerge:
- Home and place-making
- Parenthood (possibly)
- Career evolution
- Creative pursuits
- Travel and adventure
- Community building
But like a real tree, I can’t force these branches—they’ll emerge naturally from the strong trunk and deep roots I’m cultivating now.
This note will grow and evolve as the life tree metaphor develops further. It’s connected to my broader thinking about Digital Garden Ecosystem Cultivating Life: Building a Digital Garden Ecosystem
